State Rep. Paul Opsommer, at right, and Gov. Jennifer Granholm, left, this week participated in a bill-signing ceremony for a new law that helps protect waste haulers and utility workers. Carole Ely, pictured at left, was instrumental in getting the bill passed. Steve Reed with Granger also participated in the ceremony. The law is the first of its kind in the country.  (6/5/2009)

A bipartisan package of bills encouraging the creation of IGCC renaissance zones and enhanced oil production technology was the emphasis of a Jan. 22, 2008 news conference at the Capitol with Rep. Opsommer. The legislation would encourage domestic energy production in Michigan to help reduce our dependence on foreign oil, as well as to help create local energy, fuel, and jobs for the state.  (7/7/2008)

On March 25, 2007, Rep. Opsommer, second from right, took part in a Voice of Democracy event in Fowler. Created in 1947 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Voice of Democracy scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12 that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships.  (7/7/2008)

Opsommer invited Granger as his guest for the speech. During her State of the State address, Granholm discussed the use of renewable energy. Opsommer applauds Senate efforts on local control

State Rep. Paul Opsommer today renewed his call for passage of House Bill 5331 in response to announcements that some state departmental cost-cutting moves were going to be achieved through the use of 10 furlough days.

Racing to the Top?

The federal government is offering states money if they meet certain educational reforms. In general, I still believe that education should be a state level function, and that there is more danger than reward in always chasing federal dollars.

Opsommer announces legislation to reform Administrative Rules Process

State Rep. Paul Opsommer today announced he will introduce legislation that seeks to regain the authority the Legislature had in the administrative rulemaking process prior to the Supreme Court decision in Blank v Department of Corrections.
