Carole Ely, pictured at left, was instrumental in getting the bill passed. Steve Reed with Granger also participated in the ceremony. The law is the first of its kind in the country.

A bipartisan package of bills encouraging the creation of IGCC renaissance zones and enhanced oil production technology was the emphasis of a Jan. 22, 2008 news conference at the Capitol with Rep. Opsommer. The legislation would encourage domestic energy production in Michigan to help reduce our dependence on foreign oil, as well as to help create local energy, fuel, and jobs for the state.

On March 25, 2007, Rep. Opsommer, second from right, took part in a Voice of Democracy event in Fowler. Created in 1947 by the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Voice of Democracy scholarship program is an audio-essay contest for high school students in grades 9-12 that annually provides more than $3 million in scholarships.

During her State of the State address, Granholm discussed the use of renewable energy. Granger has several electric generation stations in Michigan where recovered landfill gas is used to fuel engine generators that produce “green” energy onsite.
